• Excessive alcohol consumption contributes to more than 4,600 deaths among underage youth, that is, persons less than 21 years of age, in the United States each year.
• Brain imaging studies have found that after consuming alcohol, even social drinkers find it difficult to tell the difference between threatening and non-threatening social stimulus.
• Scientists now believe that certain factors in a person's environment influence whether a person with a genetic risk for alcoholism ever develops the health problem. A person's risk for developing alcoholism can increase based on the person's environment, including where and how he or she lives; family, friends, and culture; peer pressure; and even how easy it is to get alcohol.
• Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women, and a combination of physical and mental birth defects among children that last throughout life.
