  • The type of treatment one receives for their alcohol dependence problems depends on the severity of their alcohol problem and the resources that are available in their community. Treatment may include detoxification (the process of safely getting alcohol out of your system); taking doctor-prescribed medications, such as disulfiram (Antabuse') or naltrexone (ReVia), to help prevent a return (or relapse) to drinking once drinking has stopped; and individual and/or group counseling.
  • If someone begins consuming alcohol at an early age, they are 40% to 60% more likely to become an alcoholic, regardless of family history, and studies indicate a potential for permanent memory impairment.
  • Almost 2,000 people under 21 years of age die each year in car crashes in which underage drinking is involved. Alcohol is involved in nearly half of all violent deaths involving teens.
  • What are caffeinated alcoholic beverages (CNVs)? Caffeinated alcoholic beverages (CNVs) are premixed beverages that combine alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants. They may be malt- or distilled spirits-based and usually have higher alcohol content than beer (e.g., 5%'12% on average for CNVs compared to 4%'5% for beer). The caffeine content in these beverages is usually not reported.
