• According to a 2010 study done by the University of Michigan, women suffering from alcoholism suffer much greater effects on their daily lives than do alcoholic men.
• Studies show that women start to have alcohol-related problems at lower drinking levels than men do, partly because women weigh less than men.
• What is binge drinking? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism binge drinking is defined as a pattern of alcohol consumption that brings the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level to 0.08% or more. This pattern of drinking usually corresponds to 5 or more drinks on a single occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on a single occasion for women, generally within about 2 hours.
• A study by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates that acetaldehyde, the primary breakdown product of ethanol and a known carcinogen, does increase the incidence of upper gastrointestinal cancer.
